65 arrests within 24 hours CID arrests teenage duo over hate speech Curfew re-imposed in Kandy Admin District except Municipal area



The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested two teenagers yesterday (9), for spreading statements, via the internet, instigating racial hatred among communities. One suspect was a 17-year-old student residing in Homagama and the other an 18-year-old from Colpetty, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.
Speaking at a media briefing yesterday, he said that during a 24-hour period, which commenced at 6 p.m. on 8 March and went on till 6 a.m. yesterday, 65 suspects were arrested by various Police jurisdictions in Kandy. Thereby, the total arrested stood at 146 (from 4-9 March). Among those arrested, were 11 who broke curfew. He said that the...... suspects would be produced in Court under the Emergency Regulations and the Public Security Ordinance and if convicted, they would be imprisoned for a period of seven years.
Gunasekara further said that the Police curfew was re-imposed in the Kandy Administrative District excluding the Municipal area. The curfew came into force at 8 p.m. yesterday and would end at 5 a.m. today (10). He added that however, the situation was now much calmer in those areas.
